Cats and cosplay modding! This is one of my very favorite ways to express myself as a gamer. I will be posting this cat cosplay I did of Cattleya at the 2013 Geekycon, the first convention I will be cosplaying at, and some of the photos I took there.
I’ve been cosplaying for around a year and a half now, but I have to say I have an unhealthy obsession with cats, and cat cosplay in particular, and I also got inspired by the cats from Little Cosplay Girl who were also cats, hence the name I chose. I wanted to create a cat cosplay, and after I created one for a little girl I saw at a con in 2013, I was hooked.
I really liked how the cat ears turned out, and decided to do one for myself. The original plan was to make my own head, but that wasn’t exactly feasible for a big con, so I ended up buying my own ears (as I mentioned, I have an unhealthy obsession with cats).
But first, a bit of a history lesson. In early March, the cat ears I made for the little girl I cosplayed at the 2013 Geekycon turned out so well, I was so in love with them that I decided to make a few more and sell them for myself (and to benefit my friend, if she would like some!). The first cat ears I sold were the red ones and green ones in this set. I sold out of them within a few hours. I had originally planned to make them grey but couldn’t decide how, and so I went with red. I decided to post them to Reddit under the name of Little Cosplay Girl, as you can see in the picture below. I was also thinking about a better name, but I thought that was unnecessary and I also thought it was kinda cute.
I made more, and that’s when my obsession began. (You can see in the second picture, the one with the green ears on a grey background.) I made a few different colours and styles, but I ended up selling them all. I sold the yellow ones first, followed by the red, then the green, then the purple, then the purple with stripes.
I continued to do this until the middle of April, and kept having more people come to me with requests. I made about 5-6 of each kind. At this point, I decided to start selling on Etsy because I wasn’t sure how much I was going to get for them. On April 15, I posted them for sale on Etsy, and had them shipped to a couple of places to see if anyone would buy them. I had the idea to sell them from one of the biggest online Etsy shops, Etsy Plus, but when I checked out the shipping charges, it came out to $25, and that was only because they had an item on sale that was cheaper than the item I was selling. I didn’t want to risk shipping them that far with no returns, so I kept the plan to sell my handmade goods. I sold my yellow ones for $15, and the red ones for $15. The purple one was sold for $30. The one I didn’t get a picture of on Etsy, I didn’t put any value on it. It’s the purple with stripes, and it came with a note from my friends at Etsy Plus. They told me that the shipping is about $9, but they are sending it to my house with “free shipping”. I’m sooo happy with them, and I have gotten tons of compliments, which is even better than money.
I’ve gotten several requests to sell other handmade goods. I told them that I might be able to do that, but I wanted them to pay me first before I start. I told them that I would be willing to sell some of my old handmade goods on Etsy, because I have been selling handmade items for over six years, and I know all the things I have that I can make some money off of. I don’t just have some random items that I made on a whim. I actually have some of the most expensive handmade goods ever. My most expensive one was my handmade baby blanket, which was $50. And I have other items in my Etsy shop that are at least $25. I think that you should have to pay to take a risk.
One of my first items I sold, was my handmade wooden baby doll. I sold her for $15.
My customers are also amazing. A couple of months ago, someone sent me a link to this girl and she made a list of all the things that she wanted on Etsy and asked me to make her a bunch of things. She then spent thousands of dollars on shipping to get it all shipped to her house. She then got all excited when she got the first package and I told her that there would be about four more packages. She sd that she would spend the money to get the other two packages because she really liked the items and I know that the items I made were worth it. I hope that my customers know that I put a lot of work into the things that they buy.
One of my packages was handmade baby rugs. I even bought all the supplies and handmade them one at a time. They were all handmade with cotton. I then ordered a bunch of yarn and dyed it myself. I actually spent about $5,000 on the rugs, which isn’t too bad, but I also spent hundreds of dollars on the yarn and dye. My first package arrived and I put it on the floor in my house and I was so happy. This woman had told me that she loved everything that I had made and she bought all of my other items. This was her first item and I know that she is super excited about it. I have heard her talking about it and all I can say is “I’m so happy for you!”
About an hour later, I received the last package and put it on the floor in my house and I was super happy. I can not wt to see what it brings me in the future.
I don’t really know what my future holds, but I know that I am very happy with how I have made a living. I have so much fun with it and it is almost like a second job. I wish that you knew how much work goes into what you buy on Etsy. It’s a small hobby, but a huge passion. I am not sure if that will be my career, but I know that it is an awesome experience. I get to sell items that I love to make and I get to do it on my own schedule. It’s a win-win for all of us.
If you are thinking of selling on Etsy, I would definitely recommend that you give it a shot. It is very rewarding when you receive feedback from your customers. Not only do they let you know that they like the item you made, but they also give you more ideas of what you can make next. They are very appreciative of you and your talents. All that they want is for you to be happy with your decision to sell on Etsy. It is like a second job for me and I enjoy it immensely.
