Stun gun for dogs?

by Jens

The other day I posted on the BBC’s page on stun gun use (1). If you’re like me you were quite surprised to see that even though a stun gun is in fact a ‘deadly weapon’ it is legal to own. I had hoped that if someone did get shot by a stun gun it would at least send a loud noise and a sharp pain through the chest, if not actually kill the person.

It may seem strange that anyone would own a stun gun as it could very easily kill the owner if used on someone or it may even shock the victim, sending them into a fit. If that happens the police could arrest the owner and take the stun gun away. If anyone is going to get hurt it’s the police, not the owner. Also even if it were used on someone the stun gun could be removed from the owner’s hand before he even realized what had happened.

So are stun guns really useful? It depends on the dog and its behaviour. For example the dog may be nervous and you want it to learn that you are not afraid of it and that it does not need to show fear. You could teach it to be more relaxed and behave more correctly if it feels that it can get away from you by running away and if it thinks it can hurt you by lunging. If this is not your dog you may feel that you need to teach the dog to be more passive and that it should stop trying to dominate your actions. Perhaps it’s a dog that doesn’t respond to its name or it’s behaviour and is just too independent to train. It may not like being restrained or controlled in any way.

If your dog is nervous or reacts in an aggressive manner you will be able to tell when it is being controlled or when it feels safe. You will also be able to tell when it feels unsafe and is reacting in a defensive manner. You can teach it to be more relaxed or to stay calm by taking the stress off it and making sure that it feels safe. You can make it less nervous by encouraging it to see you, be touched or talked to in a calm and relaxed manner. You can also teach the dog to be more relaxed by giving a reward each time it does something calmly. This is also a good way to reduce stress by using food for rewards in a way that is gentle and positive.

When training a dog it is important to avoid making a fuss over small successes. Some dogs get stressed if they are encouraged and praised for being good. We must learn to be patient and understanding. The only things that count are the good moments when the dog is calm and relaxed. Each time it is calm and relaxed it is learning to be that way.

Another important part of training is not to force your dog. If it does not want to learn do not push it. If it is not able to go forward it is not going to be able to go forward. It may not even be able to go backwards. It will be easier to teach it to go forward by putting it in front of you. If it is getting stuck when it sees a dog or another person then it can be taught to go backwards or sideways by placing it in an uncomfortable position. Remember that a dog is a lot smarter than you give it credit for.

You must teach your dog to respond to you when you come near or touch it. By doing this it will know that you are there to keep it safe. It will be less nervous and more relaxed. It will not be frightened when you have to discipline it. It is able to feel safe when you have it close to you. By doing this you can make a calm, safe environment.

You must not make your dog do anything that it is not ready to do. It may surprise you by doing something that you have not trained it to do. However, it will most likely be something that is safe and does not hurt you.

You must not force a dog to do anything. This is the one thing that you will probably have a lot of trouble with if you are new to dogs and dog training. You must not show it a behaviour that you are not happy with and force it to do the behaviour. Most dogs learn best through positive reinforcement.

You must not just reward your dog when it is doing something you want it to do. You must teach it the correct way to do the right behaviour. This includes not rewarding it when it is performing a bad habit. Your dog will not be able to associate a good behaviour with a good reward.

You must understand the difference between reward and punishment. Some trainers think that they will not use rewards to train dogs but that is not a good idea. Rewards are what the dog wants. Punishments are what you do not want to be done. Most people believe that punishment is better than reward. However, if you can learn how to control the reward and punishment you use, rewards will be more effective.

You must make sure that you give your dog something to chew on if you can. Your dog will appreciate this. You should only provide it with a chew toy and not bones or raw meat. Your dog is not going to be interested in a chew toy. You need to give your dog something to chew on that it is not going to harm it.

You must be careful when you are around your dog. Do not let your dog run free. This is a big risk. Always leash your dog. You must be sure that your dog is with you when you are in public areas. Your dog could easily hurt someone.

You must ensure that you are always safe when you are around your dog. This is the most important thing. If you have a dog and know how to properly treat it and care for it, you can have a happy dog for many years. The tips you have just read can provide you with some great information and help you on your way to being a dog trainer.
